A Frenchman upsets the Malaysian hero Lee Chong Wei in the first round of men’s singles match. Lee Chong Wei is now out of the competition that supposed to be his last stint at the World Championships.
Brice Leverdez pulled off a major and a shocking upset at the badminton world championships by defeating the crowd’s favorite to win this year’s world championships and men’s second see Lee Chong Wei in three games in Glasgow on Tuesday (August 22).
We can now call Leverdez as Lee Chong Wei’s killer or stopper because this is his second shocking defeat to him after having lost to the Frenchman at the Denmark Open last year.
The world meet’s three-time runners-up Chong Wei was hoping for a change of fortune under coach Datuk Misbun Sidek and Hendrawan, but he failed in his mission again.
We all know that this is Chong Wei’s 10th world championships and probably the last. It is hard to say this but a lot of people will be sad if this is really the last time that we may see Lee Chong Wei compete at the World Championships.
The 31-year-old claimed the biggest scalp of his career 21-19, 22-24, 21-17 in a long and grueling 75 minutes match, and in the process perhaps ended Lee’s elusive search for the world title which has seen him take three silver medals just as he has done in the Olympics.

I’m really happy,” he said. “I managed to stay relaxed and played my own game.”
It came to a point that Leverdez had two match points in the second game – 20-21 and 21-22 – and it was only a successful hawk eye challenge on the second match point that saved Lee from a straight games exit.
In the deciding game, the 34-year-old Malaysian lead 15-10 – but the Frenchman wouldn’t give in.
Leverdez said “I knew I was in trouble, but I never gave up”. Leverdez, who won the 2013 Scottish Open title at the same venue and is ranked 31 in the world.

Lee Chong Wei said "I tried my best and he got lucky on a few points,” also “I’m very disappointed."
It was very obvious that Lee Chong Wei was close to speechless after his shocking loss. Now the World No 2 asked to be given space and said he wants to rest before making any decisions on his future.

“I cannot comment on any plans for the moment because I cannot think now. I will take a break before making any decisions,” said Chong Wei, when met after the match.
Lee Chong Wei, admitted that his opponent put him under pressure in the match and was the better man on the day and that was the best thing about the Legend, accepting defeat like a real gentlemen.
The sad part is for Lee Chong Wei it was another chance gone at ending his world title drought.
Well whatever decisions and whatever happens, we the fans are always on your side Lee Chong Wei, and we would still want to see you compete on the highest badminton stages and held that trophy in your hands.
