Badminton Basic Skills and Drills


Are you a serious badminton player? Then you should know by now that doing some simple badminton drills and routines will have a great and will bring you miracles in the future in becoming a better player. Playing games will surely help you in enhancing your competitiveness and in trying your learned strategy but playing alone will not be enough. Spend time and effort in your practice and training for you to become a better and a scarier badminton player.

Here are some of the basic practice that you can run through to improve your game;

Wall Rally Drill

First is find a good and a tall wall then mark the wall of the height of the net and also a good practice wall should at least be 20 feet high to accommodate clears and then chalk that wall with the height of the net above 5 feet above the ground.

Now take an old badminton racquets the heavier the better to practice also your muscle and power and hit the shuttle against the wall. Hit it with your forehand and backhand, it can also be straight or diagonal. This method can be used for practicing almost every stroke and it is also a good way to improve your footwork, strengthen the arm and wrist muscles used in badminton because you cannot anticipate how fast the shuttle will bounce back and because of that your reflexes will be practice.

You’ll experience a high speed and a delay bounce of the shuttle with this practice. As the shuttle rebounds so fast from the wall, your wrist will naturally come into play. Unconsciously you will be able to learn how to switch grips at an instance and for sure you will be amazed on your improvement next time you step into the badminton court to play.

Overhead Strokes

One secret for this practice drill is that you should have a lot of shuttles, because the more you have is the better for this routine. Get yourself a partner that will play as a feeder that will throw the shuttles into different areas of your backcourt. You will then use your forehand, backhand or around the head to play the clears, drop shots or smashes. After each shot then you should always return to your base position after each shot.

This badminton drill is meant to improve your agility, speed, and accuracy in executing overhead strokes. Make sure that you keep in mind that you have to play quality shots to the other side. You have to remember that you shouldn’t just reach the shuttles you need to hit it with accuracy and power to be able to improve your game.

Net Play


Like the overhead stroke drill you might need a lot of shuttles also and a partner to feed you those shuttles. Your partner should throw those shuttles to your net area. Now you have a lot of choices you can either play a net shot, a net kill, or a net lift with your forehand or backhand? Make sure that you always return to your base position after each shot.

This badminton drill is meant to improve your net play and your movement on the court. Your reflexes will be enhanced and your killer instinct will surely be improved. The quality of your return is important. Pay attention to it or this practice will not be effective.

Half Court Singles

This drill will improve your footwork and increase stamina. It will train you to play more accurate shots with all strokes as well. It is fun to play and effective in improving your game. This one is the most basic of the drills that you can do to improve your game.

Play 2 on 1

Most advanced and serious players are doing this as a preparation for their match and it is by playing 2 versus 1. It is played on a singles court and is great for improving your fitness, agility, speed around the court, footwork, focus, and shot accuracy. Because the goal here is to beat your opponents it’s like doubling up your body and senses just to match up on your 2 opponents.

The two players on one side of the court must assume a front back position and play as they would in a singles match. You will then be able to play in a very tough and pressured condition, enabling you to raise your game and release adrenaline and extreme focus just to do well in the match.

Your idols are putting a lot of effort during their drills and training and if you aspire to be one and to be like them then you should do that too. Practice the above list and for sure in no time you’ll see yourself winning and winning in a badminton match.
